...The flags represented Indian nations from the Otoe-Missouria (the first tribe to council with Lewis & Clark) to the Clatsop-Nehalem (hosts to the Corps of Discovery for the winter of 1805-06). The event took place at the site of the Clatsop village of Chief Coboway, to whom the explorers gave their winter quarters, Fort Clatsop, on their departure in March 1806.

...The event ended with a flyover by F-15 jets (unseen in the clouds—it was re-characterized as a “noise-over”) and Blackhawk helicopters, and with a 21-gun salute from modern howitzers and a Civil-War-era cannon. ... The Oregon Historical Society opened a four-month run of the national Lewis & Clark bicentennial exhibition, the most comprehensive collection of expedition artifacts, artwork, and documents ever assembled (more than 600 artifacts that have not been viewed together since the Corps of Discovery returned to St.

...A key goal of the Lewis & Clark bicentennial has been to remind Americans of the role of the native peoples through whose homelands the Corps of Discovery passed. ... Long after the band music and the speeches are forgotten, the attendees will likely remember the colorful panoply of tribal flags and their significance in representing the original peoples of the American West.

University of Portland Professor Mark Eifler will discuss the remarkable global consequences of the famous Lewis and Clark expedition.

...Our guide, Margaret Miller, pointed out the site of the village that Lewis & Clark visited on Nov. 7th, 1805, just prior to camping in view of the Ocian. The journals disclose that they were lead back to the Columbia river channel from the village through some marshy islands (the Hunting Islands) The Wahkaikum Indian who lead them was wearing sailor clothes.

DESC had to bypass the location in 2005 & 2006 because of low tides which affect Elochoman Slough and Steamboat Slough.

...But the most extraordinary thing that happened was a spectacular dive by a bald eagle, no more than 20 yards from my boat.

...Afterwards we retired to Margaret's lovely house for wine and cheese, which she served while dressed as Mrs.

...Sid and I talked about how we wished we could be camping out at Charlottesville with everyone, but we thought that a few of you might envy our activities, too.

In it you follow the story of a young Native boy, snatched from his home and sent to missionary boarding school.

...He told us about being kidnapped at Celilo Falls by a fishtruck driver when he was a boy and ending up at an Indian boarding school. At the school, his "Indian-ness" was taken away from him and he became very homesick, but was required by law to attend this government-run missionary school. ... So, our story begins in the present at the bottom of the Columbia River where 4 ghosts (two native/ two whites) have been stuck on the last rotting remnants of old fishing platforms buried by the slackwater of the dam 50 years ago. ... When the four stories are told it becomes evident that they all were responsible in some way for two boys being kidnapped at Celilo and taken to the boarding school.”

...Many will recognize Chenoa Egawa as the young actress who created the title role of Sacagawea in the Oregon Children’s Theatre musical in 2003, for which Marv Ross wrote the music.

...Between 1:00 - 1:30 p.m., at the Rilea shooting range, past Chapter president Mike Carrick and nationally-known authority on the firearms used by Lewis and Clark, will describe and demonstrate his most recent acquisition: an Austrian air rifle, one of only three known to exist in the U.S.

...Recent historical research has discovered that this "air gun" could fire 22 lead balls a minute and was capable of killing a man at 100 yards — definitely not your Daisy BB gun!

...In the early 1800s, rifles were loaded with loose gunpowder by pouring it down the muzzle, then a round lead ball was encased in a cloth patch and rammed down on top of the powder. ... So it is easy to understand the Indians' (and any person of the era's) astonishment to see Lewis fire 22 shots per minute: no reloading, no loud bang, and no smoke — it was the assault rifle of the period, and it must have been pretty intimidating to anyone thinking about attacking this band of explorers.

She is the author of two books, the first for Timber Press in Portland (The Gardens of San Francisco, 1988) and her next, John Charles Olmsted in the Pacific Northwest, to be published in connection with the 2009 centennial of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition on the University of Washington campus.
