January 2011

President’s Corner

p1080780
For the better part of the past decade, Larry McClure (at left) has guided our chapter, bringing us exciting and educational speakers, recruiting dynamic new members, and fostering stewardship of the Lewis & Clark Trail. His example has inspired me to become more involved and to attempt to follow in his footsteps as he focuses on the challenges of being secretary of the national organization.

I am lucky to have such a great group of people on the board to help me on this journey, including our newest member, Dick Basch of the Clatsop-Nehalem. I think that you all will be excited about our plans for 2011 and beyond. We will continue to bring interesting “Explore More” activities to you, such as our behind-the-scenes visit to the Oregon Historical Society on January 22.

We also plan to step up our community involvement and promote trail stewardship by participating in the National Park Service planning for management of the Lewis & Clark Trail in our region. Please think about what that might mean to your community and let us know so that we can communicate that to the NPS planning group.
We are already working on a partnership with the Friends of Baltimore Woods in St. Johns to improve historical interpretation of Clark’s venture up the Willamette River. That organization is working on acquiring land to create a natural corridor along the river and has become very interested in the historical tie-in to Lewis & Clark.

Join us for a tour of the Oregon Historical Society’s Lewis & Clark artifacts and its Research Library on Saturday, January 22, 2011, from 10:30 to 12:30.

OHS owns several artifacts associated with the Expedition. We’ll see a 3-legged frying pan called a “spider”, a whale bone (inscribed “M. Lewi”), Lewis’s branding iron, and George Shannon’s “housewife” (sewing kit). Its peace medal is out on loan.

Marsha Matthews, OHS’s director of public services, will discuss the research that has been done on the frying pan and the provenance of the other pieces.

Geoff Wexler, research library manager at OHS, will provide an overview of the library’s collections.

We’ll meet at OHS at 1200 S.W. Park Ave., in Portland, then have lunch at 1:00 at the Old Spaghetti Factory (715 S.W. Bancroft St.). OHS is free to members; others pay admission.

To RSVP: contact Lyn Trainer, 503-246-0451 or melendym2004@yahoo.com.

In September Glen Kirkpatrick led another informational and interesting hike on the Sandy River and Delta.

In October we visited the vintage B17 bomber and the Wings of Freedom Museum in Oak Grove, enjoying a delicious “wapato dinner”.

Time to Join the National Foundation

Enjoying your membership in the Oregon Chapter, but not yet a member of the National Foundation? You are missing an important opportunity to receive timely and interesting information about the L&C story and to support the stewardship of the national historic trail.

As the Foundation now settles into its post-bicentennial size with reduced staff and more-focused programming, we hope that all Oregon Chapter members will join and support our national umbrella organization. The president is Stephenie Ambrose Tubbs; the secretary is our own Larry McClure. www.lewisandclark.org

In our business meeting, members acknowledged Larry McClure stepping down as co-president (after four years as president) and becoming past president. (Mark Johnson fills out the term through 2011 as the sole president.) Members roundly re-elected Glen Kirkpatrick as vice-president and Dick Hohnbaum as treasurer for two-year terms through 2012. Thelma Haggenmiller and Lyn Trainer were re-elected and Dick Basch elected to three-year terms through 2013. Keith Hay (after 12 years on the board) was declared the first “director emeritus”.

David Szymanski, park superintendent, gave an overview of recent park projects. Tom Wilson spoke about how the Corps celebrated holidays. Debbie Wilson talked about the Fort Clatsop bookstore and the “Lewis & Clark National Park Association”. Chapter guests, the Woodburn scouts and scoutmaster Don Stitt, led the flag pledge.

Videos were presented and a silent auction and raffle raised funds for chapter work. Many thanks to the event organizers!
